Back Alley Bikes is located, where else but the alley entrance of 3535 Cass Ave. This shop has been serving the people of their community for five years now. They have several programs to serve people who are in need of a bike simply for transportation. They also have several bikes for kids that have been recycled into safe and worthy machines.
Here's how it works, tell them you need a bike, volunteer at certain times with kids and help them fix these bikes and help in any way they need you. After a certain amount of service hours you can possibly roll out of there with a nice bike.
They have a huge storage and work areas. Many rooms are filled with donated bicycles, frames and parts of all kind. Just going through the garbage there you can snag a good part or two. So I can imagine spending service hours there you could actually put together the bike of your dreams.
Now that's said, the secret is out. Yes they do take cash too. Spend some time there instead and see what you come up with.
